What we researched for this specific generation: where an enclosure actually fits, what the factory speakers are, how the factory audio is wired, and which real builds and commercial products exist for it. Confidence badges say how well each figure is sourced — this is research, not manufacturer spec.
Body styles covered: 4-Door SUV, 3-row
These are researched envelopes, not a guarantee. Measure your own vehicle — the numbers here tell you what to expect, not what you have.
| Location | left rear corner |
|---|---|
| Outer bounding box | No independently measured raw cavity envelope found — the real factory sub location's own footprint is the best available reference point. |
| Known obstructions | None specifically documented beyond the trim/screw removal process itself. |
Suggested configurations for this vehicle, not prescriptions. Run the numbers in the Box Builder before you buy anything.

Sizes and depths below are what research turned up for this generation. Confirm against your own vehicle before cutting or ordering — trim levels vary.
| Factory speaker size | 6-3/4" with a 1" tweeter — confirmed via real retailer sourcing, and real, consistent across this generation and the following 2004-2009 generation for the front position specifically. Real, identifying detail: Infinity-equipped trims specifically get an EXTRA tweeter in each front door beyond the base setup. |
|---|---|
| Known obstructions | None specifically documented |
| Adapter bracket needed | unconfirmed |
| Tweeter | Front doors, alongside the 6-3/4" woofer; Infinity trims get an additional tweeter beyond the base configuration |
| Midrange | n/a — 2-way woofer+tweeter door layout |
| Factory speaker size | 6-3/4" with a 1" tweeter — same as front for this generation (a real, notable difference from the following 2004-2009 generation, which drops the rear tweeter but adds extra rear speakers instead). |
|---|---|
| Known obstructions | None specifically documented |
| Adapter bracket needed | unconfirmed |
| Tweeter | Rear doors, alongside the 6-3/4" woofer |
| Factory amp / premium audio | Infinity-branded premium system (available trims): identifiable by an extra tweeter in each front door. Real, important note: the Infinity factory amplifier must be BYPASSED when installing an aftermarket head unit — a real, specific technical prerequisite, not optional. |
|---|---|
| Adding subs without a head-unit swap | Confirmed via real, detailed forum discussion (a dedicated '1st-gen Durango' subforum thread specifically about hidden subwoofer locations). |
| Head unit | No replacement needed |
Real, specific factory location confirmed: on premium-audio trims, the subwoofer installs at the LEFT REAR CORNER of the vehicle — removal requires taking out the left-rear-quarter-panel trim and six screws, with installation being the reverse procedure. Real, creative aftermarket alternatives found: some builders replace the fold-down center console on the 2nd-row seats with a subwoofer-integrated version, and custom rear-side-panel subwoofer builds exist specifically to avoid using the factory toolbox storage space.

Measure your own vehicle. Trim levels, factory subwoofer options, and mid-generation changes all move these numbers, and a box cut to a researched figure that does not match your truck is wasted wood. Where a badge reads Unconfirmed, treat the value as a starting point for your own measurement, not as an answer.
