What we researched for this specific generation: where an enclosure actually fits, what the factory speakers are, how the factory audio is wired, and which real builds and commercial products exist for it. Confidence badges say how well each figure is sourced — this is research, not manufacturer spec.
Body styles covered: 4-Door Sedan
These are researched envelopes, not a guarantee. Measure your own vehicle — the numbers here tell you what to expect, not what you have.
| Location | trunk, driver side wall (promoted from existing notes) |
|---|---|
| Outer bounding box | 8" depth from mounting ring, 18"L, 16"H — real builder testimony confirms a 15.5"-tall box barely fits |
| Known obstructions | Genuinely tight trunk clearance on this platform — flag any box over 15.5" tall as high-risk |
| Usable volume estimate | 1 ft³ |
| Location | trunk floor, overall space available for a freestanding enclosure (NOT the same measurement as the driver-side-wall cavity above) |
|---|---|
| Outer bounding box | 40" W x 17" H x 27" D (coupe) / 34" D (sedan) |
| Known obstructions | This is the gross trunk envelope, not a fitted cavity — it does not account for the trunk opening, which is the real constraint on getting a finished box in. The driver-side-wall entry above documents a 15.5"-tall practical access limit from actual builder testimony; treat that as the binding number for a tall box even though the gross space is 17" high. |
Suggested configurations for this vehicle, not prescriptions. Run the numbers in the Box Builder before you buy anything.

|---|---|
| Box type | sealed |
| Location | trunk, driver side, keep height under 15.5" |
| Subwoofers | 1x12" sealed, 1.00 ft3 |
|---|---|
| Box type | sealed |
| Location | trunk, driver side wall |
Sizes and depths below are what research turned up for this generation. Confirm against your own vehicle before cutting or ordering — trim levels vary.
| Factory speaker size | 6-3/4" — genuinely unique dimensions requiring mounting brackets for any aftermarket replacement |
|---|---|
| Known obstructions | None specifically documented |
| Adapter bracket needed | yes |
| Factory speaker size | 6-3/4" (same as front) |
|---|---|
| Known obstructions | None specifically documented |
| Adapter bracket needed | yes |
| Tweeter | n/a — tweeter (where equipped) is sail-panel mounted, front only |
| Factory amp / premium audio | Two tiers, and the difference matters a lot for anyone adding bass. BASE system: 4 speakers, no factory amp, no subwoofer. PREMIUM AUDIO system: 10 speakers including a real 8" factory SUBWOOFER, plus a discrete factory amplifier, SiriusXM and HD Radio. THE TRAP ON THE PREMIUM SYSTEM: its factory speakers are LOW-IMPEDANCE. Dropping in ordinary 4-ohm aftermarket speakers without touching the amp causes a major drop in volume — Crutchfield's own warning. To use 4-ohm aftermarket speakers you have to bypass the factory amp and add your own. The factory amp is reachable behind the passenger-side kick panel and under-dash panel (remove the passenger door scuff plate and door gasket first). Head units are a 5" (base) or 7" (Premium) screen, and both are replaceable. |
|---|---|
| Adding subs without a head-unit swap | Confirmed straightforward — trunk-based builds don't touch the head unit |
| Head unit | No replacement needed |
Real specific spec: 8" depth from mounting ring, 18"L, 16"H, fits against the driver side trunk wall, 1.00 ft3 air space for a 12" sealed sub. REAL ACCESS CONSTRAINT, same category as the Camaro/Chrysler 300/Mustang findings: trunk clearance is genuinely tight on this platform — a box just 15.5" in height barely fits (noted specifically on the 8th gen, but the tight-trunk theme recurs across Civic generations generally, worth checking on any Civic entry added later).

Measure your own vehicle. Trim levels, factory subwoofer options, and mid-generation changes all move these numbers, and a box cut to a researched figure that does not match your truck is wasted wood. Where a badge reads Unconfirmed, treat the value as a starting point for your own measurement, not as an answer.
