Factory audio integration

Factory amp / premium audio	The Town Car ran through several distinct factory systems across this generation, and which one a given car has changes the job substantially. Early cars: a single-disc base receiver. Later: the once-optional 6-DISC receiver became standard. There was an optional ALPINE system that added a subwoofer and replaced the base car's full-range door speakers with plate-mounted COMPONENT sets. A DVD/navigation system arrived later on the option sheet, and that was eventually paired with a 9-SPEAKER THX-CERTIFIED package — the top tier. Identify which system the car has before ordering anything: the base car has full-range 6x8s and no tweeters, while any of the optional systems bring the sail-panel tweeters and, on upper trims, the rear-deck 8" dual-voice-coil subwoofer.

THE SAIL-PANEL TWEETER HAS NO HARNESS ADAPTER — this is the one genuinely awkward part of the job. The factory 1-1/2" tweeter has a built-in crossover, is GLUED to its bracket, and is HARD-WIRED directly into the factory woofer rather than plugged in. Crutchfield's recommendation is Posi-Products connectors to make the connections without splicing or soldering, plus a universal backstrap to physically mount the new tweeter, since the glued factory bracket gives you nothing to screw into.
Replacing the factory 8" dual-voice-coil rear-deck subwoofer requires RE-DRILLING the mounting holes in the factory polymer enclosure — an aftermarket 8" will not match the factory screw pattern. Plan for drilling, or skip the factory sub location entirely.
Replacing the receiver costs the factory satellite radio tuner and the factory navigation system on cars that have them.
iPod/MP3 and satellite radio adapters exist for this car as an alternative to replacing the receiver at all — useful on the DVD/navigation and THX cars where the factory head unit is worth keeping.
