What we researched for this specific generation: where an enclosure actually fits, what the factory speakers are, how the factory audio is wired, and which real builds and commercial products exist for it. Confidence badges say how well each figure is sourced — this is research, not manufacturer spec.
Body styles covered: 4-Door Sedan, Hatchback
These are researched envelopes, not a guarantee. Measure your own vehicle — the numbers here tell you what to expect, not what you have.
| Location | spare tire well, hatchback trunk |
|---|---|
| Outer bounding box | ~6.5" clearance at the lowered hatchback trunk floor (real, forum-confirmed figure) — full footprint not independently published |
| Known obstructions | Factory Bose spare-tire sub occupies the well by default on equipped trims |
Suggested configurations for this vehicle, not prescriptions. Run the numbers in the Box Builder before you buy anything.
| Subwoofers | LOC-fed aftermarket sub in the hatchback spare-tire well (accept minor timing mismatch) |
|---|---|
| Box type | aftermarket, replacing factory spare-tire sub |
| Location | hatchback spare-tire well |
| Subwoofers | aftermarket sub + PAC AOEM-MAZ2 + miniDSP 2x4 for proper Bose-matched timing/EQ |
|---|---|
| Box type | aftermarket, integrated with factory DSP |
| Location | hatchback spare-tire well |
Sizes and depths below are what research turned up for this generation. Confirm against your own vehicle before cutting or ordering — trim levels vary.
| Known obstructions | Bose-equipped trims route front bass through dedicated mini-subwoofers behind the kick panels, not through the main door speakers — worth noting when planning a front-stage upgrade |
|---|---|
| Adapter bracket needed | unconfirmed |
| Tweeter | SAIL-PANEL mounted (door pillar / A-pillar area, accessible by pulling the sail panel near the mirror) — real, confirmed, same convention already found on the older (2004-2010) Mazda3 hatchback entry. Exact diameter not confirmed, but the older entry's ~1/2" ceiling (for non-cut installs) is a plausible reference point given the shared brand convention, not confirmed identical. |
| Adapter bracket needed | unconfirmed |
|---|---|
| Tweeter | n/a — tweeter is sail-panel mounted, front only |
| Factory amp / premium audio | Bose confirmed on equipped trims, with sound routed through a factory Bose DSP/amplifier — real integration caution found: bypassing it with a simple LOC can introduce audible timing/phase mismatch between the sub and the rest of the system, since the LOC signal skips the DSP's own processing delay. |
|---|---|
| Adding subs without a head-unit swap | Confirmed possible via LOC, but with the timing caveat above. A real, specifically-named fix was found: pairing a PAC AOEM-MAZ2 interface with a miniDSP 2x4 to restore proper crossover/level/EQ/timing alignment with the factory system. |
| Head unit | No replacement needed |
Real, confirmed factory design: Bose-equipped trims route bass through mini-subwoofers behind the front kick panels PLUS a dedicated spare-tire-well subwoofer in the hatchback's trunk. This is a genuinely different, more distributed architecture than a single trunk sub. Real hatchback trunk detail: the lowered cargo floor gives roughly 6.5" of clearance, and some owners replace the factory spare-tire sub with an aftermarket enclosure in that same well. Sedan-specific cargo/spare-tire-well detail was NOT independently confirmed — the hatchback is the better-sourced body style for this generation; treat sedan specifics as not researched rather than assumed identical.

Measure your own vehicle. Trim levels, factory subwoofer options, and mid-generation changes all move these numbers, and a box cut to a researched figure that does not match your truck is wasted wood. Where a badge reads Unconfirmed, treat the value as a starting point for your own measurement, not as an answer.
