What we researched for this specific generation: where an enclosure actually fits, what the factory speakers are, how the factory audio is wired, and which real builds and commercial products exist for it. Confidence badges say how well each figure is sourced — this is research, not manufacturer spec.
Body styles covered: 4-Door Crossover
These are researched envelopes, not a guarantee. Measure your own vehicle — the numbers here tell you what to expect, not what you have.
| Location | cargo area behind rear seats; spare tire well beneath cargo floor (gas trims retain a full-size or compact spare) |
|---|---|
| Outer bounding box | No independently measured raw cavity envelope found — for a data-contamination issue encountered and avoided during this research. |
| Known obstructions | JBL trims: factory 8" subwoofer occupies part of the cargo floor, driver's side (2013-2015) or passenger's side (2016-2018). Hybrid trims: 12V auxiliary battery in the rear-left cargo bay next to the spare tire; many Hybrid trims lack a spare tire entirely. |
Suggested configurations for this vehicle, not prescriptions. Run the numbers in the Box Builder before you buy anything.
| Subwoofers | 1x8" powered, reusing the factory JBL enclosure location (JBL trims only) |
|---|---|
| Box type | n/a — factory enclosure reuse |
| Location | cargo area, driver's side (2013-2015) or passenger's side (2016-2018) |
| Subwoofers | 1x8" or 1x10" shallow sealed, custom-built (no named commercial molded enclosure exists for this generation) |
|---|---|
| Box type | sealed, custom |
| Location | cargo area or spare tire well — measure on-site, no vehicle-specific commercial product to reference |
Sizes and depths below are what research turned up for this generation. Confirm against your own vehicle before cutting or ordering — trim levels vary.
| Factory speaker size | 6.5" — confirmed via a Kicker CS-series upgrade kit and a DS18 upgrade package both sold for this generation's door speakers (DS18's listing is scoped specifically to 2014-2018, narrower and more trustworthy than Kicker's overly broad 2001-2018 claim spanning three real generations — flagged, not blindly trusted, same lesson as a prior Ram product) |
|---|---|
| Known obstructions | None specifically documented |
| Adapter bracket needed | unconfirmed |
| Factory speaker size | 6.5" (same commercial-kit sourcing as front) |
|---|---|
| Known obstructions | None specifically documented |
| Adapter bracket needed | unconfirmed |
| Tweeter | n/a — tweeter is front A-pillar only |
| Factory amp / premium audio | JBL-equipped trims: factory 8" subwoofer in the cargo area, driver's side 2013-2015, passenger's side 2016-2018 (facelift year) — confirmed via OEM part listing (JBL 861500R030) plus forum corroboration. Exact JBL amp wattage/speaker-count breakdown for this generation not independently confirmed. |
|---|---|
| Adding subs without a head-unit swap | A real forum thread ('Aftermarket Subwoofer in non-JBL') specifically discusses adding a subwoofer to non-JBL trims of this generation — confirms this is a live, documented topic. Exact tap point/part number not independently confirmed. |
| Head unit | No replacement needed |
No dedicated molded commercial enclosure (Skar/Kicker/JL Audio-style vehicle-specific product) was found for this generation — all three of those brands' RAV4-specific enclosures cover ONLY 2019-2025 (5th Gen), a real market gap, same pattern already seen on Highlander XU50/XU70. A real, specific, generation-internal finding: the factory JBL 8" subwoofer moved sides during this generation's life — driver's side rear cargo area for 2013-2015, passenger's side for 2016-2018 (facelift year), confirmed via an OEM replacement part listing (JBL 861500R030) cross-referenced with forum discussion. JL Audio confirmed via forum discussion to NOT offer a Stealthbox for any RAV4 generation. Shallow-mount powered subs (Cerwin Vega VPSTX12 at 4.7" tall, Rockville Ghost at 5.7", JBL Basspro at 6.5") are discussed by owners for spare-tire-well mounting, the same family of products used on other vehicles covered here for similar wells — not independently confirmed as installed specifically on a 2013-2018 model in the sources checked (RAV4World's generation-labeling in search results was unreliable —).
GENUINE FINDING, DIFFERENT FROM THE 5th GEN FILE — do not assume parity: on this generation (Hybrid trim introduced 2016), the 12V auxiliary battery sits in the rear-left cargo bay next to the spare tire, and MANY Hybrid trims of this generation ship with NO spare tire at all (a tire-inflator kit instead), specifically because of space taken by hybrid componentry. This is a real, confirmed cargo-space cost that the 2019-2025 (5th Gen) RAV4 Hybrid does NOT have (5th gen Hybrid keeps identical cargo capacity to gas, per that entry) — the two generations are NOT interchangeable on this point.

Measure your own vehicle. Trim levels, factory subwoofer options, and mid-generation changes all move these numbers, and a box cut to a researched figure that does not match your truck is wasted wood. Where a badge reads Unconfirmed, treat the value as a starting point for your own measurement, not as an answer.
