What we researched for this specific generation: where an enclosure actually fits, what the factory speakers are, how the factory audio is wired, and which real builds and commercial products exist for it. Confidence badges say how well each figure is sourced — this is research, not manufacturer spec.
Body styles covered: 4-Door Sedan
These are researched envelopes, not a guarantee. Measure your own vehicle — the numbers here tell you what to expect, not what you have.
| Location | trunk |
|---|---|
| Outer bounding box | No maker-published or independently measured trunk dimensions found (width between wheel housings, floor length, height and opening are absent from every Volkswagen press kit read, 2012 to 2022). |
| Known obstructions | Cars with the 2012-2015 Fender system carry its subwoofer in the trunk ("a trunk-mounted subwoofer"); its size and position are not given. Nothing else documented. |
Sizes and depths below are what research turned up for this generation. Confirm against your own vehicle before cutting or ordering — trim levels vary.
| Factory speaker size | Volkswagen's press kits give speaker counts, not sizes or positions (only the Fender system's A-pillar tweeters are placed) |
|---|---|
| Adapter bracket needed | unconfirmed |
| Factory speaker size | same gap as the front doors |

| Factory amp / premium audio | Volkswagen, by year and trim. 2012-2015: the S has an "RCD 310 radio with CD player and six speakers"; the SE a "Premium VIII touchscreen radio with six-CD in-dash changer and eight speakers"; the Fender Premium Audio system "cranks out 400 watts of power played through nine speakers, including a trunk-mounted subwoofer", with the Fender logo on its A-pillar tweeters. The kits name the Fender system on the 2012 SEL lines, the 2.5 SEL, TDI SEL Premium and 3.6 SE with Sunroof in 2013, the 1.8T SEL Premium, TDI SEL Premium and 3.6 SE with Sunroof in 2014, and the 1.8T SEL Premium, TDI SEL Premium and 3.6 SEL Premium in 2015; the 2015 Limited Edition has an 8-speaker sound system. 2016: a six-speaker sound system on the 1.8T S, an eight-speaker Discover Media system on the 1.8T SE with Technology, and the Fender Premium Audio system on the 1.8T SEL and above (no count or wattage given). 2017 and 2018: no speaker count given. 2019: Fender Premium Audio standard on the SE R-Line. 2020-2022: "the 400-watt Fender Premium Audio system with eight speakers and a separate subwoofer" on the SEL (2020), the R-Line (2021) and the R-Line and Limited Edition (2022). Volkswagen gives no speaker or subwoofer size. |

| Adding subs without a head-unit swap | no vehicle-specific integration information found |
Volkswagen's press kits: "the large trunk can accommodate 15.9 cubic feet of luggage" (2016, 2017 and 2018 kits; the 2019 kit "15.9 cu-ft"), unlabelled US cubic feet. The 2012 to 2015 kits mention "trunk space" with no figure, and the 2020 to 2022 kits give none. EPA's luggage figure for the sedan is 16 (2012, 2019 and 2021 records). A luggage rating, not a box dimension. Volkswagen gives no trunk length, width, height or opening; its kits list a 60/40 split rear seat on the S and a rear-seat pass-through on the SEL (no opening size). No box made for a 2012-2022 Passat was found from the box makers checked. Measure your own trunk before cutting wood.

Measure your own vehicle. Trim levels, factory subwoofer options, and mid-generation changes all move these numbers, and a box cut to a researched figure that does not match your truck is wasted wood. Where a badge reads Unconfirmed, treat the value as a starting point for your own measurement, not as an answer.
