2018-2025 Volvo XC60 2nd Gen — subwoofer box fitment

What we researched for this specific generation: where an enclosure actually fits, what the factory speakers are, how the factory audio is wired, and which real builds and commercial products exist for it. Confidence badges say how well each figure is sourced — this is research, not manufacturer spec.

Body styles covered: 4-Door SUV, 2-row

Where a box actually fits

These are researched envelopes, not a guarantee. Measure your own vehicle — the numbers here tell you what to expect, not what you have.

Standard Unconfirmed

Locationcargo area, passenger side, behind trunk paneling
Outer bounding boxNot applicable to the factory driver itself — it is a free-air design with no discrete box volume (see cargo_fitment). No independently measured raw cavity envelope was found for an ADDED aftermarket enclosure.
Known obstructionsTrunk paneling and insulation must be removed to access the area; a cover grille sits over the factory driver on the trunk side.

Starting points

Suggested configurations for this vehicle, not prescriptions. Run the numbers in the Box Builder before you buy anything.

Door speaker fitment

Sizes and depths below are what research turned up for this generation. Confirm against your own vehicle before cutting or ordering — trim levels vary.

Front doors Likely

Factory speaker size6.5" (standard aftermarket-replacement sizing, confirmed via real retailer/forum sourcing) — real, specific note: both front AND rear mounting brackets are confirmed to support a 6.5" speaker, meaning a rear upsize to match the front is a straightforward, bracket-compatible option.
Known obstructionsNone specifically documented
Adapter bracket neededno
Tweeter'Tweeter-on-top' design — real, confirmed 25mm (1") Nautilus tweeter mounted ON TOP of the door panel (not recessed), same brand-wide B&W design confirmed on the sibling XC90/S60/V60/S90/V90 entries. Alongside a 100mm Kevlar midrange, per door.
Midrange100mm (~3.94") Kevlar-cone midrange, per door.

Rear doors Likely

Factory speaker size5.25" stock, with real confirmation that the mounting bracket also supports a 6.5" upsize if desired.
Known obstructionsNone specifically documented
Adapter bracket neededno
TweeterSame 'tweeter-on-top' 25mm Nautilus design as the front, one per rear door.
Midrange100mm (~3.94") Kevlar-cone midrange, per rear door.

Factory audio integration

Factory amp / premium audioBowers & Wilkins premium system: standard on the Polestar Engineered variant, optional on the Ultra trim — 15 speakers, 1,410W. GENUINE, CONFIRMED DIFFERENCE from the sister XC90 entry : do NOT assume identical speaker counts across the two models despite sharing the same general B&W free-air-subwoofer engineering approach and wiring architecture — the XC60's 15-speaker/1,410W spec is real and distinct from the XC90's own (different) full breakdown.
Adding subs without a head-unit swapConfirmed via a real, documented owner install ('VOLVO XC60 Subwoofer Install - AFTER' thread) and the same general Volvo/B&W wiring-tap approach already detailed on the XC90 entry (front-door-woofer L&R signal as the recommended feed for an added sub, not the rear).
Head unitNo replacement needed

Mounting locations

Standard Solid

GENUINELY DIFFERENT ENGINEERING APPROACH, worth flagging clearly for anyone planning a build around this: the factory Bowers & Wilkins subwoofer is a 'FREE AIR' (a.k.a. 'fresh air') design — there is NO sealed/ported box enclosure at all. The driver is integrated directly into the vehicle's structure and uses the CABIN VOLUME ITSELF as the acoustic enclosure. This breaks the standard box-volume model this entire database is built around for that specific factory driver — an aftermarket sub added alongside it still needs its own conventional box, but don't assume the factory unit's 'enclosure' has any measurable volume to reference or reuse. Real, unresolved discrepancy on sub SIDE: one source states left side of the cargo area, others reference the right side (matching the XC90 entry's confirmed right-side location) — not resolved to one side for the XC60 specifically, flagged rather than picked arbitrarily. Accessible behind trunk paneling/insulation on the passenger side, behind a cover grille, not visible without removing trim.

Before you cut anything

Measure your own vehicle. Trim levels, factory subwoofer options, and mid-generation changes all move these numbers, and a box cut to a researched figure that does not match your truck is wasted wood. Where a badge reads Unconfirmed, treat the value as a starting point for your own measurement, not as an answer.
